I know it won't matter for another year but I wanna get this settled before next season so that everyone can plan around it...
I want to un-weight the draft lottery. That means I want each team to have the same exact odds of getting the first pick, even if you went 0-82 or missed the playoff by one game. This may sound stupid but hear me out.
-I hate tanking. Teams give up way before they need to just so that they can establish draft position. This rule would have everyone working hard to make the playoffs and ensure high activity. It would increase league parity and provide tough competition. I would rather have 10-15 teams hovering around the .500 mark than a few 60 win teams and some 60 loss teams.
-Despite its stated intention, the lottery actually creates LESS parity in the league. I know that you think that giving the worst team the best rookie evens out the league but it doesn't. Take Portland or Oklahoma City for example. They were awful teams and were rewarded with a high pick. The next year, the team was almost just as bad because there new rookies weren't good enough to make a big impact immediately. So they found themselves at the top of the draft again the next year. And the next. So now Portland has Aldridge, Roy, and Oden. And OKC has Durant, Green, and Harden. In about four or five years, all will hit their primes and both teams will be stacked. In the meantime, teams like San Antonio and Dallas and Boston get old. Their best players diminish and drop off and they have to start all over by sucking. So instead of creating league parity, the good teams just switch places with the bad. Useless...
If we layer the youth into the league, then skill will follow and the teams will be more even. Lots stop creating future dynasties and punishing now successful teams. By only involving non-playoff teams in a lottery that wasn't weighted, lesser teams would still have an advantage. But at least we wouldn't be giving them championships five years in advance.
